Dakar Car Category

Definition and Core Status
The Dakar Car category is the most heavily contested class with the largest vehicle entry list in the Dakar Rally, encompassing multiple sub-categories ranging from prototype off-roaders to production-modified vehicles. At the heart of competition in the Car category is the teamwork between the driver and the co-driver; the co-driver handles navigation across unmarked desert dunes and wilderness relying solely on the roadbook, while the driver must balance outright pace with vehicle mechanical reliability over extreme terrains. In the 2026 Dakar Rally, a total of 81 crews competed in the Car category, making it the largest contingent across all categories.

Category Structure
The Dakar Car category (excluding trucks) is officially divided into four main classes. The Ultimate class (formerly T1) represents the pinnacle of the Car category, featuring tubular spaceframe chassis, four-wheel drive, high horsepower outputs, and long-travel suspension setups. With the highest level of development freedom, it serves as the premier battleground for factory works teams fighting for the overall championship. The Stock class (formerly T2) is dedicated to production-based race machines, retaining the original production chassis and powertrain with competition safety modifications, making it the closest category to showroom-spec hardcore 4x4s. The Challenger class (T3) utilises lightweight prototype off-road vehicles, serving as the feeder tier for the Ultimate class. Meanwhile, the SSV class (T4) comprises side-by-side all-terrain vehicles, offering a comparatively accessible entry point.

2026 Season Competitive Landscape
The overall drivers' title in the 2026 Dakar Rally Car category was clinched by veteran Qatari driver Nasser Al-Attiyah, securing his sixth career Dakar Car category overall championship. Behind the wheel of the Dacia Sandrider, Al-Attiyah delivered Dacia's maiden overall triumph in the event. Ford works team drivers Nani Roma of Spain and Mattias Ekström of Sweden finished second and third overall, respectively. Nine-time World Rally Championship (WRC) champion Sébastien Loeb missed out on a podium finish for the first time in this edition.

Performance of Chinese Drivers
Chinese driver Han Wei finished 26th overall in the Car category, registering the best result among Chinese drivers in this edition. Jiujiang Team drivers Lu Binglong and Tao Yongming concluded the rally in 27th and 34th place respectively, with Tao also bagging the event's "Rookie Award".

Revival of the Stock Class
A prominent highlight of the 2026 Dakar Car category is the revival of the Stock class (production-modified category). The FIA and event organiser ASO rolled out new technical regulations for this class, aimed at restoring the competitive edge of production-derived race cars and drawing wider manufacturer involvement. The Land Rover Defender Rally Team joined the fray with the Defender Dakar D7X-R, built upon the production bodyshell of the Defender OCTA, retaining the original factory 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine and eight-speed automatic gearbox, while featuring dedicated motorsport upgrades including a 550-litre fuel cell, a competition-spec roll cage, and 35-inch tyres. Toyota similarly deployed a factory works effort in the class, going head-to-head against Land Rover.
